One of the very highest-payoff climate change solutions is carbon-fee-and-dividend: It fixes the serious market distortion, where climate harm is inflicted on innocent third parties but no cost ever shows up on the transgressor’s books – in effect, an enormous subsidy for fossil fuels and their unmindful use.
In many nations, that means polluters never see a bill for their pollution, while the rest of us are stuck with sea-level rise, permanent drought, expanding deserts, cost of moving cities to higher ground, increasing numbers of refugees and failed states, and more frequent extreme weather events than ever before seen in recorded history.
Fix the market distortion, and much else fixes itself automatically as wise free-market decision-making kicks in…
Citizens Climate Lobby is a volunteer team focussed on getting the US Congress to fix this broken business-accounting by passing a carbon fee and dividend law. Even conservative economists and policy-makers view carbon fee and dividend as a path to a transparent, well-functioning market – one of the market-based solutions conservative climate change fighters endorse: A market in which all players make rational decisions based on pollution’s true cost, which would almost automatically result in using fossil fuels more-wisely and frugally… And no free-rider syndrome anymore.
