Completely nonpolluting electricity has arrived for Silicon Valey residences and businesses.
Silicon Valley Clean Energy is about to go live.
The rollout over the next several months offers 100% carbon free energy in two different flavors depending on source.
Customers will be automatically enrolled in the carbon-free, 50% renewable/50% hydropower option that is structured to be 1% cheaper than the existing power company. Or, for $3 to $5 more one can choose the second option to be both carbon-free and 100% renewable.
There is an opt-out for those who are not interested and want to stay with the legacy power company Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), which has always offered mostly fossil fuel-based energy plus nuclear.
(In fairness, it should be said that PG&E has been moving in good faith to add clean hydroelectric, geothermal, wind and solar, plus has long been a national leader among utilities about encouraging energy-efficiency).
This one-ups them, and adds to the list of cities pledging to reach 100% renewables including Park City, UT and Boulder, CO, as well as cities of San Mateo County midway between Silicon Valley and San Francisco.
