From Eric Holthaus of Grist, a profile of 21 kids skillfully using the court system to sue those who harm the kids’ futures… by causing climate change.
In this case, the commercial product causing the kids harm is coal, oil and natural gas because of the greenhouse gas pollution that are an ugly side effect of all fossil fuels.
And the enabler they are specifically suing is the new administration in Washington, to stop it from aggressively suppressing science-based public policy to benefit its industry allies, at the expense of everyone else’s future.
This is SUCH a great example of using one’s voice to save the planet… in this case, calling upon the extra superpower working-in-groups offers.
Might other groups of kids also consider going after refrigerants, which are at this time THE most pernicious of greenhouse gases, according to Paul Hawkins’ excellent Project Drawdown’s numeric ranking of the most effective tactics to pursue?
I’m hoping similar lawsuits are pursued in every major country with a sane court system… this tactic holds great promise and can be persued over many decades.
As the climate crisis unfolds, I predict even courts which initially reject the suits would have no choice but to take them up again.

Not sure where to start saving the planet (civilization, really)? Always remember the exciting truth that “Hope is a renewable resource.” Then, our practical answer becomes “Start by deeply knowing your three personal Superpowers: ”
1) To save the planet, CHANGE YOURSELF FIRST;
2) To save the planet, INVEST YOUR WORKING LIFE;
3) To save the planet, USE YOUR VOICE and take advocacy seriously! Never miss a vote and never, ever stop influencing your government and all businesses locally, at the state level, and at the national level.
It falls upon you and I to lead the way with substantive global warming solutions. (Far from being a bummer, this is actually a fun trend for each of us to be part of… get energized!) Our kids and their kids will be proud of us…
And in all cases and at all times, cast aside the learned-helplessness that infects so much of modern life… the time is now for climate change solutions. No one else is going to do your part for you… never give up.
